Ownership & Heritage

Shepherd’s Inn is owned by Black Tobagonian entrepreneur Colin Shepherd, who acquired and transformed the former Toucan Inn into a locally owned boutique hotel.

Raised in Delaford, a small fishing community overlooking King’s Bay on Tobago’s Atlantic coast, Shepherd developed his entrepreneurial skills early in life, raising pigs and goats and selling their products to help support his family.

He later established Sheppy’s Auto Rentals, growing the business into one of Tobago’s recognized vehicle rental companies before expanding into hospitality.

After the former Toucan Inn closed in 2014, Shepherd purchased the property and undertook an extensive refurbishment. The hotel reopened as Shepherd’s Inn in January 2016.

Its full name, Irwin Shepherd’s Inn Tobago, reflects Shepherd’s childhood connection to farming and his Delaford roots. Guestrooms and cabanas are named after places associated with his hometown, incorporating local history into the guest experience.

Shepherd’s approach emphasizes attentive service, community connections, and environmentally responsible hospitality. The property has also received recognition for its participation in the Green Key sustainability program.

Today, Shepherd’s Inn represents Black Caribbean entrepreneurship and the contributions of locally owned hospitality businesses to Tobago’s tourism economy.
