Situated near shopping, restaurants, and the island’s southwestern attractions, Viola’s Place offers easy access to beaches, cultural experiences, and outdoor activities while maintaining a relaxed residential setting.
Viola’s Place offers a practical, independently owned alternative to Tobago’s larger beachfront resorts. Its apartment-style accommodations and self-catering facilities appeal to travelers who prefer additional flexibility, particularly families, groups, and guests planning extended stays.
The swimming pool and garden setting provide opportunities to relax between excursions, while the Lowlands location makes it convenient to explore Tobago’s beaches, restaurants, shopping, and cultural attractions.
For travelers interested in supporting locally rooted Caribbean hospitality, Viola’s Place also offers a meaningful connection to a longstanding Tobago family business.
Viola’s Place is a family-owned Tobago hotel operated by Joan Brathwaite, a Caribbean hospitality entrepreneur whose family established the property in 1993.
The hotel’s story began with Joan’s late husband, James R. Brathwaite (1939–2007), whose ambition was to create a guesthouse in Tobago. After working as a tailor’s apprentice, police constable, police prosecutor, and attorney, James pursued his entrepreneurial vision alongside Joan.
In 1993, the couple opened Viola’s Place Apartment Hotel Limited with just ten rooms, personally managing the early operations.
Joan subsequently pursued formal hotel-management training through the University of the West Indies’ extramural department and participated in tourism training and industry organizations to strengthen the business.
In March 2025, the Tobago Tourism Agency featured Joan in its HER Story series, recognizing her contributions to the island’s hospitality industry and highlighting her encouragement of women pursuing careers in tourism.
Today, Viola’s Place represents more than three decades of family entrepreneurship, local hospitality, and women’s leadership in Tobago’s tourism sector.
