Perched above a heart-shaped salt pan deep inside Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, !Xaus Lodge is a remote four-star eco-lodge owned by South Africa’s ‡Khomani San and Mier communities. Its 12 thatched chalets overlook the sweeping Kalahari landscape and a freshwater waterhole visited by desert wildlife.
Pronounced “Kaus,” the lodge offers an immersive combination of wildlife, Indigenous culture, stargazing and near-total seclusion. Accommodation is offered on a full-board basis, with meals, selected activities and transfers from the park meeting point included.

There is no regular Wi-Fi, mobile-phone signal or television, making !Xaus an authentic digital-detox destination. The lodge’s limited power, careful water use and low-impact operations reflect its sensitive desert environment.
Why Stay Here?
!Xaus Lodge offers more than a traditional safari. Guests can learn about Kalahari plants, animal tracks, traditional knowledge and the continuing cultural heritage of the ‡Khomani San and Mier communities.
Wildlife sightings may include black-maned Kalahari lions, gemsbok, springbok, wildebeest, spotted and brown hyenas, jackals, wildcats and numerous birds of prey. The surrounding desert also provides some of southern Africa’s darkest skies and exceptional views of the Milky Way.
Because the lodge is extremely remote, reaching it is part of the experience. Guests meet a lodge guide at Kamqua Picnic Site at 2:30 p.m. and then travel approximately 30 kilometers across 90 red dunes. Travelers with suitable four-wheel-drive vehicles may follow the guide in convoy, while other guests leave their vehicles at Kamqua and use the lodge’s included safari transfer.
Ownership & Heritage
!Xaus Lodge is jointly owned by the Indigenous ‡Khomani San and Mier communities, including its buildings and furnishings. It is operated on their behalf by Transfrontier Parks Destinations, a tourism company experienced in managing community-owned lodges.
The lodge grew from a historic land settlement completed in 2002, when ancestral land within the Kgalagadi was restored for the use of the two communities. Part of the settlement funding was used to construct a tourism lodge that could create employment, generate income and support cultural preservation.
The name !Xaus means “heart” in the Nama language, referring to the heart-shaped salt pan below the lodge. It also symbolizes healing, restored dignity and a renewed relationship between the communities and their ancestral land.
Staying at !Xaus directly supports Indigenous community ownership, local employment and the sale of crafts made by community artists.
