Important Update
The Potomac Hotel has deep roots in Black-owned luxury hospitality. The property was created and established as Salamander Washington DC by Sheila Johnson, billionaire entrepreneur, co-founder of BET and founder of Salamander Collection, who transformed the hotel into one of Washington’s most prominent Black-founded luxury hospitality destinations.
In August 2026, the hotel entered a new chapter, becoming The Potomac Hotel, Autograph Collection and joining Marriott’s portfolio of independent luxury and lifestyle hotels.
Johnson continues to have an ownership interest in the property as a minority partner, while Henderson Park serves as the controlling investor. Although the change means the hotel is no longer majority Black-owned, its Black hospitality heritage remains an important part of its identity and story.
That connection continues inside the hotel as well. Guests can experience Dōgon, the acclaimed restaurant from chef Kwame Onwuachi, as well as Groom Guy, the Black-owned men’s grooming and wellness company founded by Darius Davie and Matthew Sears.
For Black Hotel Guide, The Potomac Hotel is recognized as a Black-founded hotel with continuing Black ownership and a significant Black hospitality legacy.
