Historical Significance…click more..

Salamander Washington DC is a 5-star luxury hotel situated on the Southwest waterfront, offering a refined urban retreat between the National Mall and The Wharf. Formerly operating as the Mandarin Oriental Washington DC, the property was acquired and rebranded in late 2022 by the Salamander Collection, led by founder and CEO Sheila Johnson.

Historical Significance & Building

  • Neoclassical Landmark: The nine-story building features a limestone façade and ornate columns, designed to reflect the original 18th-century neoclassical plans for the capital.
  • Modern Transformation: Following a multimillion-dollar renovation completed in 2024, the hotel has transitioned from its previous Asian-inspired aesthetic to a brighter, contemporary residential design.
  • Strategic Location: It stands at the confluence of the Washington Channel and the Potomac Tidal Basin, making it the only luxury hotel directly adjacent to the basin and its famous cherry blossoms

Unique Design & Luxury Amenities

  • Residential-Style Suites: The 373 guest rooms and 51 suites were redesigned by Thomas Pheasant Studio, featuring neutral tones, mint color palettes, and marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs.
  • Salamander Spa: A massive, two-story sanctuary spanning 10,000 square feet, which includes a 40-foot heated indoor pool, vitality pools, and a unique men’s grooming lounge.
  • The Monument Club: A newly renovated, exclusive club lounge (formerly closed during the pandemic) that provides a private hospitality space for guests.

Premier Dining

The Lounge & Terrace: An elegant social hub offering all-day dining and seasonal afternoon tea with views of the hotel’s Grand Lawn and the Washington Marina.

Dōgon by Kwame Onwuachi: The hotel’s signature restaurant offers a high-energy Afro-Caribbean culinary experience. Named after the West African Dogon tribe, the menu by acclaimed Chef Kwame Onwuachi features bold storytelling through dishes like Grilled Wagyu Short Rib and Berbere Roasted Chicken.
