Nestled on Mexico’s beautiful Mayan coast, Ixchel-Balam is a Black woman-owned boutique retreat house and bed & breakfast offering travelers a peaceful sanctuary rooted in wellness, creativity, and cultural connection. Designed as an intimate escape rather than a traditional hotel, the property features five beautifully appointed guest suites, each with private en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning, along with a fully equipped cottage complete with a kitchenette for longer stays.
Founded by Rachel as the first Sanctuary House of the Black Woman Sanctuary ecosystem, Ixchel-Balam blends thoughtful hospitality with a deeper mission of rest, healing, and community. Guests are invited to experience authentic Mexican hospitality while supporting a property committed to honoring the traditions of the surrounding Mayan community and creating welcoming spaces for Black women, Indigenous women, and women of color.
Ixchel-Balam offers something increasingly rare—a boutique hospitality experience where every stay has purpose. Guests enjoy personalized accommodations in an intimate setting while supporting a mission dedicated to wellness, creativity, and cultural respect. Whether you’re seeking a quiet getaway, a creative retreat, or a meaningful travel experience beyond the typical resort, Ixchel-Balam provides a place to rest, reconnect, and experience Mexico through a more intentional lens.
Ixchel-Balam was founded by Rachel as the first Sanctuary House within the growing Black Woman Sanctuary ecosystem. More than a boutique bed and breakfast, the property was created as a gathering place where hospitality, wellness, plant wisdom, creativity, and community come together. Guided by a spirit of reciprocity and deep respect for the people, history, and living traditions of the surrounding Mayan community, proceeds from every stay help support the Black Woman Sanctuary Foundation and its mission of creating spaces where Black women, Indigenous women, and women of color can rest, create, learn, and thrive.
