Ownership & Heritage
Hotel Sages is a Black woman-owned boutique hotel in Bali, owned and operated by entrepreneurs Angelica Espiritu and Savina Briggs. Their acquisition of the property transformed what began as a personal dream of investing in Bali into a groundbreaking hospitality venture that has been recognized as Bali’s first Black-owned hotel.
The journey began after Angelica and Savina traveled to Bali seeking rest, inspiration and eventually a small villa they could enjoy themselves and rent when away. Both brought extensive professional experience to the search—Angelica as a real estate investor with a background in finance and Savina with experience in real estate, healthcare administration and operations. When they discovered that Hotel Sages was available for acquisition, their plans quickly grew from purchasing a villa to owning an entire boutique hotel.
Under their ownership, Hotel Sages has evolved into more than a beautiful place to stay. The pair envision the property as a sanctuary centered around rest, wellness, cultural connection, representation and intentional hospitality, while demonstrating what Black ownership can look like within the international luxury travel industry.
The hotel’s heritage also predates its current life as a boutique retreat. The property was once a ceramics studio and later the private art studio of Indonesian painter, sculptor and ceramist Riz Riz Rizz. Angelica and Savina have intentionally preserved that creative connection, displaying his paintings, ceramics and sculptures throughout the hotel.
At the same time, the owners emphasize respect for the Balinese community and culture surrounding them. Hotel Sages employs an all-Balinese team and incorporates local traditions and experiences into the guest experience, including canang sari offerings, Balinese ingredients and cuisine, locally sourced products and cultural activities.
For Angelica and Savina, becoming Black hotel owners abroad represents something larger than acquiring a property. They have described Hotel Sages as part of a broader vision of representation, generational wealth, wellness and creating spaces where travelers can see themselves reflected in ownership and luxury hospitality.
Today, Hotel Sages stands as a distinctive example of Black women expanding the footprint of Black-owned hospitality globally—from Bali to the wider world.
