The origins of Kruger Shalati Train trace back to the late 1800s, when the Selati Railway was built following the discovery of gold in the region. Completed in 1915, the railway ran through the area now known as Kruger National Park, which had yet to be established at the time.

Today, Kruger Shalati is a luxury lodge owned by Motsamayi Tourism Group,the oldest Black-empowered tourism company in South Africa. With a 51% Black ownership in partnership with Futuregrowth Asset Management, Motsamayi is dedicated to curating authentic African experiences and driving growth in the tourism industry.

The Black-Empowered Tourism Group Behind Kruger Shalati

Unlike a founder-led boutique hotel, Kruger Shalati – The Train on the Bridge & Garden Suites grew from the vision of a Black-empowered South African tourism group.

The extraordinary hotel was developed by Thebe Tourism Group, now known as Motsamayi Tourism Group, with tourism executive Jerry Mabena playing a leading role in bringing the concept to life.

The idea was ambitious: transform the historic Selati railway bridge inside Kruger National Park into a luxury hotel by permanently positioning restored train carriages high above the Sabie River—the same location where early visitors to Kruger once stopped overnight by rail.

Today, Motsamayi Tourism Group describes itself as South Africa’s oldest Black-empowered tourism entity, with 51% Black ownership. Its portfolio extends beyond Kruger Shalati to other distinctive African tourism and hospitality experiences.
