Why Stay Here

Sunbirds Lodge Chobe combines the adventure of an African safari with the intimacy of a locally owned boutique lodge.

Its location near Chobe National Park makes it an excellent base for travelers hoping to experience Botswana’s extraordinary wildlife, including the enormous elephant populations for which the Chobe region is famous.

Guests can spend the morning exploring Chobe National Park, cruise the Chobe River in search of wildlife, or take a day trip to spectacular Victoria Falls before returning to the lodge’s peaceful gardens and swimming pools.

With only 14 accommodations, Sunbirds offers a more intimate experience than a large resort. Couples can choose spacious suites and double rooms, while families and groups can take advantage of some of the property’s exceptionally large family accommodations or the private four-bedroom Sunbirds Chobe Villa.

Its location near the borders of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe also makes the lodge an appealing base for travelers planning a broader Southern African adventure.

Ownership & Heritage

Sunbirds Lodge Chobe is a female citizen-owned Botswana hospitality business founded by Mrs. Boammaaruri Merrigan, locally known as “Mma Ledombi.”

Merrigan took a remarkably hands-on approach to creating the property. During its development, she transported plants, tiles and other materials roughly 1,000 kilometers from Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, managed construction herself, installed the irrigation system and personally planted the lawn that guests enjoy today.

The lodge was licensed in 2021 and named for the colorful sunbirds that inhabit its gardens.

Her vision extends beyond creating a beautiful place for travelers to stay. Sunbirds Lodge emphasizes employment and opportunity for local women, with women making up more than 80% of its staff. The business particularly seeks to provide opportunities for vulnerable women, including single parents and young women facing difficult circumstances.

Merrigan also supports employees and members of the surrounding community through educational and charitable initiatives.

Today, Sunbirds Lodge Chobe represents the kind of locally rooted, Black African-owned hospitality that Black Hotel Guide was created to help travelers discover—allowing visitors to experience Botswana’s world-renowned Chobe region while supporting a business built by a Botswana entrepreneur and invested in her community.
