Opened in October 2025, the hotel occupies the former Hilltop Arms apartment building and serves as a gateway for those exploring the city’s civil rights history.

The Elevation Convening Center & Hotel is owned by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), a nonprofit organization founded and led by Bryan Stevenson, a prominent Black civil rights attorney and author. 

While it is strictly owned by a nonprofit entity rather than a private individual, the hotel is widely recognized as a Black-founded and Black-led institution. Its entire mission and design are centered around Black history and social justice: 

  • Founded by Bryan Stevenson: As the Executive Director of EJI, Stevenson conceptualized the hotel as a “sanctuary” for visitors to Montgomery’s Legacy Sites.
  • Cultural Focus: The hotel features AYA Soulful Dining, a restaurant celebrating African, Caribbean, and Southern culinary traditions, and a library dedicated to Black history.
  • Operations: The property is managed by Ithaka Hospitality Partners, a firm based in Auburn, Alabama, that works in close collaboration with EJI.
