Overview
Founded in 1996 by siblings Deneen, David, and Coral Brown, Brown Estate Vineyards is a trailblazer in California wine history as Napa Valley’s first and only Black-owned estate winery. The Brown family’s story began in 1980 when their parents purchased an abandoned ranch in the Chiles Valley AVA of Napa. What started as a homestead restoration—reviving vineyards neglected for decades—grew into a nationally celebrated wine label. Their inaugural vintage, a 1996 Zinfandel, debuted to rave reviews and set the tone for their now-iconic style: bold, elegant, and deeply expressive of Napa terroir.
Founders’ Journey
The Browns faced challenges from the start—transforming a neglected property into a working vineyard required years of hands-on labor, learning viticulture, and rebuilding soil health. In 2000, a devastating warehouse fire destroyed much of their inventory, but their commitment never wavered. They rebuilt, expanded, and in 2017 opened Brown Downtown Napa, a vibrant tasting room in the heart of the city. Today, the winery is a symbol of heritage, perseverance, and innovation, inspiring a new generation of diverse wine entrepreneurs.
